Organization is an important component of seedling evaluation:  making up the "watch list" on maiden bloom, testing the selected ones through several cycles, comparing them with others of the same type, and finally deciding which few are worthy of introduction.

Years ago, when we held an  "Open Garden", many visitors seemed to be more interested in the beds of selected seedlings than anything else (with the possible exception of the refreshment table).

They were also fascinated by my color-coding system.  When a seedling went into an evaluation bed, it got a separate tag with a black label.  If it performed well enough to remain on the watch list, it got a red label.  If it proved to be a good breeder, even if not worthy of introduction itself, it got a blue label.  Finally, it might get a silver TBR tag -- meaning "To Be Registered".

If you've seen the beds themselves it may seem strange to find no color codes on these pages, but those tags monitored status and these pages just provide a bit of history and a lot of clues about arilbred genetics.

All of these pages are still under construction, some with many more photos left to scan than others.

Bed 1E  AAAB-type tetraploids, all of which would be coded OGB+ and qualify as 3/4-breds in the current classification system.

Bed 2E  AAB-type triploids, all of which would also be coded OGB+ and qualify as 3/4-breds in the current classification system, but used to be called 2/3-breds.

Bed 3E ABBB-type tetraploids and ABB-type triploids, all of which would be coded OGB- and qualify as 1/4-breds in the current system.

Bed 6E ABBB- and AABB-type tetraploids, most from the "3/8ths Route". Some would be coded OGB- and qualify as 1/4-breds while others would be OGB 1/2-breds.

Bed 7E AABB-type tetraploids, all of which would qualify as 1/2-breds and be classified OGB.

Bed 8E AABB-type tetraploids, all of which would qualify as 1/2-breds and be classified OGB.

Bed 9E  AABB-type tetraploids, all of which would qualify as 1/2-breds and be classified OGB.

Bed 1C AAAB-type tetraploids, all of which would be coded OGB+ and qualify as 3/4-breds in the current classification system.

Bed 3C  Mostly ABBB-type tetraploids

Bed 16C  Mostly AAAB-type tetraploids and a few amphidiploids.

Bed 23C Mostly ABBB-type tetraploids and a couple of ABB-type triploids, all of which are classified as OGB- today.
