Daringly Different

DARINGLY DIFFERENT (McAllister, 1993)

Silken violet standards are rimmed golden tan. Falls are also rimmed with golden tan, but it frames an artwork of purple-on-white veining around a large royal purple signal. The signal has a velvety texture usually found only in pure arils. A 3/4-bred from Ballalaika Music X Sunrise in Glory.

For show aficionados, its ASI code is OGB+.

Delicate Embroidery

DELICATE EMBROIDERY (McAllister, 1993)

Amethyst-violet standards and amethyst-pink falls are delicately dotted and finely veined in burgundy.

A limitedly fertile triploid from My Joy X I. Calcaria x I. Yebrudii v. Edgecombii). For show aficionados, its ASI code is OGB+.

Don't Be Shy

DON'T BE SHY (McAllister, 1994)

Greyed greenish-yellow bitone with one of the best signals so far among the offspring of Joint Venture. From a Casa Vicente X Joint Venture, a cross that can produce either half-breds or quarterbreds, but this was registered as a quarterbred because it showed no sign of fertility. For Show aficionados, the ASI code is OGB-.

Dot's Nice

DOT'S NICE (McAllister, 1992) OGB

Koko Knoll X Promise to Elizabeth. Silvery-white standards, veined yellow around rim. Yellow falls veined and dotted nutmeg around a nutmeg beard. A proven fertile halfbred – but I have nothing to report about its offspring because all of the crosses I made with it were relatively low priority when it came to allocating space in seedling beds so I gave the seeds away. "The Coronel", as most of us called Gus Seligmann, was anything but effusive so when he said of a seedling "that's nice", it was high praise indeed. This has silvery-white standards, veined yellow, and yellow falls veined and dotted nutmeg around a nutmeg beard. I was trying to find a name that called attention to the prominent dotting, when Gus' classic comment came to mind and I couldn't resist the play on words.

Doug Goodnight

DOUG GOODNIGHT (McAllister, 1984)

Black beard, black signal, on near-black self.

An unbalanced tetraploid 3/4-bred, from Persian Pansy X Rose of Sharon. More gardenable than most near-arils, and it makes an eye-catching clump - but so far has given seedlings only with tetraploid arils.

For show aficionados, its ASI code is OGB+.

Dreamcatcher

DREAM CATCHER (McAllister, 1993) OGB-

Koko Knoll X Asha Michelle. A bicolor "plicata" with ivory standards and yellowish ivory falls with mulberry veining around the edges and a mulberry line in the signal area accenting a rust beard. Not tested for fertility. The netting reminded me of a "Dream Catcher", a Native American artistic weaving something like macrame. It's symbolic of a protective spirit who allows only good dreams to reach the sleeping child.

Dress Pinks

DRESS PINKS (McAllister, 1998)

The tangerine pink long-sought in arilbreds - blended with yellow in the falls and overlaid lilac in the standards. More ruffling than most quarterbreds, and with that still-rare signal patch.

The pod parent was a soft coral pink, from Lovely Blanche X Eunice, and the pollen parent was Sunrise in Glory. Breeding tests suggest that Dress Pinks is a triploid, like its pod parent. For show aficionados, ASI code is OGB-.

El Gigante

EL GIGANTE (McAllister, R. 1996) OGB-

(Desert Princess X Rose of Sharon) X Secret Melody. It's a bilingual play on words. Translation: "The Giant". Pronunciation: el-he-GANT-aye. This iris really named itself because it is both huge and elegant. Standards and style arms are soft gold, its golden falls have such an intense wash of reddish-violet over the blade that they look almost solid reddish-brown except for a fine gold edge and brown-on-gold veining around a brownish-violet-tipped-soft-gold beard. I have high hopes for it with tetraploid arils, but no seedlings so far.

Engraved Invitation

Engraved Invitation (McAllister, 1993)

If you like tongue-twisters, try "bicolor, pseudoplicata" because this one's standards have violet-on-white markings while the falls are rust-on- yellow.

A limitedly fertile triploid from My Joy X I. Calcaria x I. Yebrudii v. Edgecombii). For show aficionados, its ASI code is OGB+.

Expert Advice

EXPERT ADVICE  (McAllister, 1985)

Pinkish lavender standards, buff falls flushed pink. Dark burgundy signal and beard.

A fully fertile halfbred, from Esther, the Queen X Sheik.

For show aficionados, its ASI code is OGB.

Fine Feathered Friend

FINE FEATHERED FRIEND  (McAllister, R. 1998)

Something old - an onco-like form, long sought in arilbreds. Something new - plicata-like pattern, still rare in arilbreds. No, it's not a true plicata. This pattern comes from the interaction of the veining pattern of its aril ancestors and the plicata pattern of its TB ancestors.

This is a quarterbred, from Koko Knoll X Asha Michelle. For show aficionados, its ASI code is OGB-.

Flamboyant Affair

FLAMBOYANT AFFAIR Affair (McAllister, R. 1998)

Reddish-violet standards are flushed with golden orange. Greyyed reddish-violet falls have rust and violet veining and purple dotting on a white area surrounding the orange beard.

A quarterbred, from Unclaimed Treasure X Sterling Mistress.

For show aficionados, its ASI code is OGB-.

Flash of Violet

FLASH OF VIOLET (McAllister, 1998)

From Werckmeister's Beauty X Whirlwind Tour. Soft blue-violet standards, pale greenish-buff falls are washed with red-violet. In this photo, its characteristic iridescent violet flush ion the center of the falls is already starting to fade. That's why it's called "flash" of violet instead of "flush" of violet. ASI code OGB+.

Flaunt It

FLAUNT IT (McAllister, 1996) OGB-

As in "if you've got it, flaunt it" - she really struts her stuff. Iridescent imperial purple standards are flushed gold at the base and lightly dusted with gold. Golden yellow style arms have red-violet flush along the midrib and amber crests. Wide, rounded falls are a flamboyant blend of orange, red, brown and violet. No classic signal, but there's an area around the amber beard dotted purple-on-white and surrounded by a larger area stippled rust on yellow. From Goddess X Tribe of Judah. A good example of the interesting patterns obtained by crossing Tribe of Judah with recessive TB patterns. So far it has only podded to tetraploid aril pollen and none of its offspring have bloomed.

Fortune's Fancy

FORTUNE'S FANCY (McAllister, 1993)

One of the first pseudo-plicata arilbreds, this one's even a bicolor. That means the standards have white ground and rosy-violet markings while the falls have yellow ground and rust markings.

But genetically, it's not a true "plicata", it just looks like one because the veining from its aril heritage interacts with the plicata pattern from its TB ancestry. It's is a fully fertile halfbred, ASI code OGB, from Boaz X Jean Ralls.

MALEVIL IRIS GARDENS are now introducing my arilbreds.  Most are exceptionally tough selected seedlings that survived the period in which I could not get out to the garden.  Others are breeders, which I had chosen not to introduce for a variety of reasons.  Dana and Vern have, however, fallen for a few of those and convinced me that they should be made available to the next generation of hybridizers.  Click on "Recent Introductions" to see my arilbreds introduced by Malevil.
