Aril and Arilbred Breeders

(through 1975)

The Book of Descendants

A few words of explanation are in order, because these are historic records rather than a contemporary study. I'm posting this because it illustrates the lengths to which an aspiring hybridizer will go to gather information, and contains a great deal of the raw data I collected regarding the foundations of our modern, fertile arilbreds.

This is a very large book that will take some time to completely convert to HTML. The table below is simply a clickable index. Many entries still have no links set and no information in the Comments field. This merely means that I haven't yet processed the file. Others have none because I didn't perform this analysis for everything. It's a lot of work and I was interested in identifying those breakthrough breeders that had contributed the most to the gene pool of modern, fertile arilbreds and the species behind them. When the entire book has been uploaded, every name in the table will have either a clickable link or a comment as to why there is none.

Where the Charts Came From

I compiled a master list of every cultivar in the 1976 ASI Checklist that had had any descendants introduced. All of this was in the days before computerized records and I later transcribed the chart, so it is possible that I missed a breeder in compiling the or didn't get one transferred to computerized records.

In the beginning, I restricted the Descendant Analysis to first- and second-generation offspring, then later expanded the lists for certain breeders I wanted to know more about. This means that some lists are more extensive than others. Any cultivar on the list for which an extensive Descendant Analysis is available is indicated with a clickable link to it. Some with short lists have clickable links to other documents in the comments column.

Some of the cultivars introduced in the early 70s had simply not had time to have produced registered descendants, but I did not add any names to the master list on the basis of subsequent introductions. So view these as working papers, rather than a comprehensive reference book. Some of the Descendant Analyses do have very recent introductions because I've been working with those lines while others have probably not been updated since the original compilation.

The "Pod" and "Pollen" columns indicate the direction of the cross(es) in which it had been reported at that time. In many cases, one that had been previously recorded only as a pollen parent was later recorded as a pod parent (or vice versa) - but I did not attempt to maintain that part of the database.
