How far will an aspiring hybridizer go to gather information? One of my
first concerns was to identify those species that had contributed to the gene pool of modern, fertile
arils and arilbreds. I wanted to experiment with intraspecies and interspecies
crosses, to learn more about their genetic interaction.
Tom Wilkes had been able to identify some species used by C. G. White in the development of his amphidiploidlike hybrids, but was not able to find the pedigrees of individual cultivars. To supplement his list, I therefore compiled a master list of every cultivar in the 1976 ASI Checklist that had had any descendants introduced. I transcribed this chart when I computerized my records, so I concede that it is possible that I missed a breeder entirely or didn't get one transferred. Nevertheless, I do believe this list is of interest to today's hybridizers.
