Pre-1950 Descriptions

Detailed descriptions of the early cultivars are hard to find, because color codes were used instead of descriptions for registrations before 1950. This poses a special problem for arils and arilbreds, whose intricate patterns did not fit neatly into the system. For many years, I collected published descriptions, cross-checked them, and separated the ones that were clearly first-hand observations from those that were merely translations of codes, and supplemented these findings with information gathered through Robins and personal correspondence.  This information is included in the Comprehensive Checklist of Arils and Arilbreds and its Descriptive Supplement, which are distributed by HIPS.  

If dates are not available for registration and introduction, I've used codes. BRS stands for Before Registration System and includes many undated, retroactive registrations, while NR simply means Not Registered.

Three codes serve to place the cultivar within the modern classification system:  AR=Aril, AB=Arilbred, and DIS=Disenrolled.

CLARA AR (C. G. Van Tubergen, NR).  Parentage unknown. Dark shades of purple veined and netted brown. Van Tubergen, 1957. Court of Iris describes it as bronze with shadings and signal patch of violet and reports it to be regeliocyclus x onco.
