The information provided on this site is unofficial, offered to help new growers become acquainted with arils and arilbreds, and to show aspiring hybridizers the type of information that has proven useful in planning programs.

If you are already collecting, showing, or hybridizing these beauties, you probably have copies of Official Checklists.  If not, here's what's available:

  • Decennial Checklists and annual R&I Booklets are published by the American Iris Society. They cover all types of non-bulbous iris, so if you are interested in collecting or showing more than one type of iris these publications should be of primary interest. They can be purchased from the AIS Storefront.
  • The Aril Society International has published a Checklist that includes only cultivars meeting modern criteria. This is essential if you are entering specimens in an ASI-sanctioned show.
  • A Comprehensive Checklist of Arils and Arilbreds, and a Descriptive Supplement, are distributed by HIPS.  If you are interested in Historic arils or arilbreds, these are a must.  If you are hybridizing, they provide a great deal of information otherwise unobtainable. The Checklist itself includes many cultivars that aren't in the AIS Checklists because they weren't registered, and many more that aren't in ASI Checklists because they have been disenrolled.  The supplement includes descriptions otherwise available only in publications that have long been out of print.  These can be purchased through the Hips Sales Site.
