ASI Yearbooks

This list includes articles I contributed before I became the YB Editor, ones I wrote during my tenure [1982-1986], and some after it.  I inherited the fictional "Staff", a term used to disguise the fact that one person had written an unusually large number of articles, and eventually exposed the secret because I felt it lulled members into believing that the YB didn't really need their contributions.

1980 "Of Rabbits, Coat Hangers, and Iris Slides".   My first YB article.  Although I'd already made the transition from pollen-daubing to serious hybridizing, I didn't feel I had anything worth reporting from the seedling patch.
1980 "Iris Fever is Incurable".  Not a real article, but a compilation of correspondence with the then-editor -- who was clearly desperate for material.  At least it provides a glimpse of my introduction to the arils and arilbreds.
1981 "In Memoriam -- Eugene A. Hunt".  My first appearance as "Staff".
1981 "Remembrances of Koko Knoll".   More about Gene Hunt and how he got me hooked on arilbreds.
1981 "Iris Photography for Beginners". Because this dates to the period in which many amateurs were using rangefinders rather than SLRs, it includes some tips useful in today's world of digital cameras.
1981 "Tips for Slide Shows".  Just the basics of preparing a program.
1981 "History of Arilbred Awards -- Awards List".  History, obviously, but also a list of winners from the establishment of the C. G. White and Wm. Mohr Awards through 1980.
1982 "Editor's Message".  My first.
1982 "ASI Publications -- What Do You Really Want?"  Standard plea for articles.
1982 "An Informal Glossary of Terms".  Extensive, though, because the YB was running short of material that year.
1982 "Picture Trekking" -- yep, that fictional "Staff" again, this time writing about taking pictures in others' gardens.
1983 "Editor's Message".  Again.
1983 "More Comments on Publications."  Answers to questions received during the year.
1983 Hybridizing Section, written by "Staff", edited by John Holden.  Yes, I wrote all of the articles and John went over them with the proverbial fine-tooth comb.
1983 "Making That First Cross".  The premier of  "Beginner's Corner".
1983 "Then and Now".  Again, I was the "Staff" that wrote the followup material to the reprint of Gene Hunt's article about ESTHER, THE QUEEN.
1984 "Editor's Message".  Again.
1984 "Preview of 1985". Another plea for articles.
1984 "Reaching Out".  Getting more people interested in these special iris.
1984 Various "Staff" articles.  Yes, it was a one-woman operation.
1985 "Editor's Message".  Once again.
1985 "How to Register and Introduce an Iris".   With a lot of help from Kay Nelson.
1985 "A Mini-Tour of Gardens in Southern New Mexico".
1986 "Editor's Message".  For the last time.
1986 "Report from a Hybridizer's Apprentice"
1986 "A Timely Yearbook -- The Impossible Dream?"
1986 "Observations vs. Experiments"
1986 "The New ASI Checklist".  An overly optimistic announcement, as authorization to distribute even the Proof Version didn't come about until 1989,
1986 "Tracing Traits -- Blends, Dominants, and Recessives"
1986 "Breeding for Pinks -- Proven Parents"
1987 None
1988 "Guidelines for Registering Arils and Arilbreds".  With Kay Nelson.
1989 None

1990 "In Quest of Pink -- The Primrose Path". Breeding toward tangerine pink arilbreds.
1990 "Tetraploid Aril Breeding -- The Next Step". Proposed programs for using the new tetraploid arils.
1991 "Exploring the Fertile Families"
1991 "Pedigree Analysis -- A New Approach"
1991 "Adventures in Hybridizing"
1991 "Five Rules of Thumb for Beginning Hybridizers".
