Hybridizing

Updated: March 01, 2007

Hybridizing can be serious. Hybridizing can be fun. To some of us, it's both.

Here, you'll find information accumulated during my almost 50 years experience in the world of iris -- yes, I made my first cross while still in grade school -- and some hints for the future.

Course Outline

Under Construction  Now reorganizing pages using a course outline similar to the "Hybridizing 101" series posted to IRIS-LIST and IRIS-TALK, so it will be possible to note the level of difficulty as well as the subject matter of each section.

Fertile Families

The concept of a Fertile Family has been used by hybridizers for decades to describe the more intricate workings of wide crosses.   In simple terms, a Fertile Family is one whose members intercross readily and produce offspring that are also members of the same family.

Programs

Links to pages about individual programs, all of which are accessible through the hierarchy of the site, but presented as a convenient gateway for those who want an overview of hybridizing.

Records

My own breeding records, in both conventional form and in a format I hope is more convenient for the Web.  These pages focus on crosses that ultimately resulted in introductions.

References

Material that needs to be accessed from more than one page has been placed in the Library and this page has been set up as a convenient gateway to it.
