<Barbj> Gerry, is there a good Latitude and Longitude webpage someplace?
I lost all my bookmarks and it's tedious getting them back!
<SharonMc> depends on what you're trying to find. I like topozone.com
<Barbj> I want it for astrology
<Barbj> to find L & L for towns
<SharonMc> http://ceil.rootsweb.com/ has links to both gnis & topozone
<SharonMc> with gnis, you just enter the name of the town & state and it
gives you lat & long
<Barbj> Wow, Sharon, that looks like a winner!
<SharonMc> use the search engine on the home page.
<Barbj> Found Walnut Grove already
<Barbj> Sharon, back to the L &L
<Barbj> they are in decimals
<Barbj> so I need to convert to get degrees and minutes
<Barbj> multiply the decimals by 60
<Barbj> I take it
<Barbj> to get the minutes, I mean
<Gerry> Sounds right
<SharonMc> yes. then the remaining decimal by 60 to get the seconds, if
you need that precision
<SharonMc> you can also use topozone to check your calculations because
it lets you input lat/long in degrees, minutes & seconds.
<Barbj> just west of WG
<Barbj> I'm looking at maps
<Barbj> Okay, here's the exact URL for Comet, near where we live
<Barbj>
http://topozone.com/map.asp?lat=37.4103&lon=-93.6871&s=100&size=s
<Barbj> First I typed in Walnut Grove, then clicked on that name
<Barbj> when the map came up, I clicked on the left arrow to go just west
of there
<Barbj> and came upon our territory
<Barbj> So now you can see just where we live
<Barbj> just under the e in Comet
<Barbj> we will never be lost again! lol
<SharonMc> topozone is my favorite mapping site, because I can even find
churches & cemeteries of long-gone communities
<SharonMc> terraserver is also fun -- although I don't know how much
coverage it provides of MO.
<SharonMc> it has aerial & satellite photos...
<Barbj> Wow, Sharon, I can even type in Comet (where we live), and get
it, eventho it isn't really a town
<Patrick> Barb lives in a Comet?
<RogerD> on a Comet?
<Barbj> it's a bit SW of Walnut Grove
<Barbj> now I have the exact L &L of it!
<Barbj> so, say someone was born out in the country, you could get the
exact location for them for their horoscope and make it extremely
accurate
<Patrick> are you going to be doing natal charts for your seedlings
barb?
<SharonMc> Yes. You could use topozone.com if you have even a nearby
town, then use local landmarks you recognize to pinpoint the place.
Click on that point and topozone will give you the precise lat/long.
<SharonMc> guess you can tell what I was doing in "real life" while
pursuing the iris hobby/obsession....
<SharonMc> Barb -- ready to call it a night or do you need more mapping
clues?
<Barbj> Not unless you have another site. looks like this one is just perfect.
when I click on Comet, where we live, the L&L is different from
Walnut Grove, the nearest town! it's perfect! Larry even found the boonies in central MN where he used to live
<SharonMc> no, all of my favorite mapping sites are accessible from
Ceil's Corner.
<Barbj> did you give me that URL? or shall I just do a search for it?
<SharonMc> thought so. http://ceil.rootsweb.com/
<Barbj> ok, thanks!
